By statute, newly constructed homes are required to meet Vermont Residential Building Energy Standards, which are being updated for increased energy efficiency in 2011. All additions, alterations, renovations and repairs are required to meet these standards as well. The updated standards will increase energy efficiency by 12% over the current law, and the builder or contractor performing the work is required to certify that it complies with energy efficiency standards. Failure of the building to comply with these requirements may give the home owner the right to bring a lawsuit to obtain corrective measures, damages plus attorney’s fees.
